Our Story

Michael and Meghan Jones have called Alaska home for more nearly twenty years. We met and were married in Eagle River, and now have four children, who are all very creative. 

We started Steller Jay in 2018, but in 2022 we packed up our tools temporarily and spent three years serving as missionaries in the South Pacific, first managing an orphanage in Fiji and then helping build the first-ever Orthodox Christian Church in the Kingdom of Tonga.

We returned home to Eagle River in 2025 and are enjoying our lovely home after learning to see the world with new eyes during our time overseas. 

We love to be active and spend our summers outdoors – hiking, camping, fishing, gardening and working on our little “homestead” of 1 1/2 acres. During the winter we stay active by cross country skiing and use the darker hours to catch up on reading, art projects, playing music and spending time with our family and Church community.

My building career began with my mother’s gift of a carpentry set when I was about six years old. I built my dad a little box for paperclips (that he still has over 30 years later) and I never stopped building. As a kid I was our in-home handyman and could often be found high in a tree building a new tree fort. My high school vocational program gave me the technical skills I needed to start taking customers, and before long I was winning bids for large-scale deck replacements and house painting. As my skill set grew I developed a penchant for working with clients on custom, one-of-a-kind projects that add beauty and value to their homes. While I have dabbled in other career fields, from government work to serving as a missionary, I always find myself returning to the building trades because it is the work I love best!

Meghan has loved making art ever since she was old enough to put a crayon to paper. On any given day you will find her painting, sewing, drawing coloring pages based on a book one of her children is reading, creating a mosaic or screen-printing one of her own designs onto a shirt. Her expertise in artistic design and choosing complimentary colors ensures that Steller Jay projects come out looking and feeling just the way our clients have in mind.
